My name is Maria Federica Baroncini and I have been working as a tour guide since 1998.
I graduated at the University of Bologna with a MA in Visual Arts. For about ten years (from 2000 to 2012) I worked in the same university: first in the international relationships department (I worked in the organisation of both MA for foreign students and of cultural heritage programmes promoted by the European Union), then in the Department for internships and placement.
While working for the University of Bologna, I have always kept on with tour guiding as second, part- time job. I liked it very much, especially when I had to guide foreign groups: I liked to listen to their questions and to help them understand the (often) hidden meaning of a picture, or of a mosaic, or the story of the families who lived in a certain palace, or the most interesting pieces collected in the museums where I usually take my guests.
So, in 2012, I felt that I had been split between two different worlds (the “official” job and the second part-time job) too long and that I had to decide. What came next is a new chapter in my professional career: freelance tour-guide. Thus, here I am, always more proud of the challenging job I have chosen.
